Sifu kicks Fann down slope
By Sylvia Toh Paik Choo
FANN Wong (below, right) rolled down a slope over a rainbow.
If you think that reads like a Channel 8 English subtitle, well, you are close.
Martial arts sifu Rainbow Chen spoke of how, when he arrived in Singapore to work in local TV, he 'accidentally kicked Fann Wong and she went down a slope'.
The only thing going down last week was plenty of food and drink as the cast and crew of Dance Of The Dragon wrapped up filming with a barbecue at the Marina Mandarin hotel.
Shot entirely in Singapore, the story of love, passion, courage and hope whirled to 'the end' after a 47-day shoot.
We were a little surprised to find people sedately tucking into a buffet, hardly moving around to mingle.
No doubt this was the winding down after lights, camera and action seen islandwide. The locations sound like an STB brochure - Jubilee Hall, City Hall, Soup Restaurant, Tea Chapter, Telok Blangah Hill, Tuas.
For actors Fann, Jason Scott Lee and Korean hunk Jang Hyuk, and trainers Shawn and Gladys Tay (dance) and Rainbow, Wang Feng and Guo Zhifeng (action) it was time to let down their hair (well, maybe not the clean-shaven Rainbow and Wang and Guo).
It was hard to get a word in edgewise with leading lady Fann as her skiv was permanently attached to her elbow. Ever on the guard with the media, especially the non-Chinese-speaking, she even attempted to answer a question directed at Fann.
FYI, Fann, the princess of Caldecott, does speak fluent English.
She didn't think Zhang Ziyi would have anything to worry about (when Dance Of The Dragon screens), no she hasn't had any calls yet for a role with nudity, David Gan did not do her hair this time, but he did give her the strawberry dress she was wearing.
For Robin Leong of Easternlight Film Production, this was a happy time. 'Singapore is such an international place, I wish I had thought to make this film earlier!'
MAN OF YEAR
Meanwhile, at St James Power Station, the man whose family name is synonymous with the art of making and distributing films, MrHoward Shaw, was named Man of the Year by upmarket men's publication Menmode.
The 37-year-old Shaw Brothers' grandson has 'absolutely nothing to do with movies' but has devoted his time and money to environmental issues.
He became head of the Singapore Environment Council 11 years ago, long before green became a fashionable colour.

Film Shoot For Dance Of The Dragon Wraps
Easternlight Film Productions is pleased to report that the film shoot of our first movie Dance Of The Dragon - starring Jang Hyuk, Fann Wong and Jason Scott Lee – is completed. The camera started rolling on Monday 31st July and, after 47 exciting shoot days spanning over a period of eight weeks, will whirl down to a halt on Sunday 23rd September 2007. Visual and audio post production of the film commences immediately, and the film is scheduled for international release early 2008.
Filmed entirely in Singapore, Dance Of The Dragon is a tale of love, passion, courage and hope, with the demanding and visually stunning disciplines of ballroom dancing and martial arts woven into the plot. It is the latest film project supported by the Film in Singapore! Scheme – a Singapore Tourism Board (STB) initiative to encourage leading filmmakers and television producers worldwide to film and produce quality movies and television programmes locally, in order to increase top-of-mind recall of Singapore as a destination among the global audience.
Ms Winnie Pua, Director, Brand Management, at the Singapore Tourism Board, said, “We congratulate Easternlight on wrapping up their shoot in Singapore. We are delighted to support Dance of the Dragon which features an international cast and crew, and can’t wait to see it released next year. We hope that viewers around the world will enjoy the film and be inspired to visit and experience Uniquely Singapore for themselves. We welcome more filmmakers to consider filming in Singapore, where there is a unique blend of modernity, colourful cultures and rich traditions offering a varied backdrop as settings for their productions.”
Locations featured in the film include Raffles Jubilee Hall, City Hall at The Padang, Telok Blangah Hill, Soup Restaurant on Seah Street, Tea Chapter on Neil Road, the Goodwood Park Hotel, the Intercontinental Hotel at Bugis, Robinson Road, and the police training village at Tuas. In addition, ambient shots in the film feature streets around the Marina Bay area and the iconic Singapore skyline.
Executive Producer Robin Leong said, “ We hope that audiences around the world will get to experience the beautiful, culture rich, cosmopolitan city that is Singapore through the international release of Dance Of The Dragon. The production was blessed with a brilliant production team and world class performances from the cast, and we are excited to share our vision of making international quality movies with fellow Singaporeans.
Calvin Tan, Marketing Director for Easternlight Films added “We’ve received so much support from the STB, media, partnering companies and sponsors, all of whom pulled out the stops to help us achieve our vision for the film. People rallied around us, wishing for us to succeed, and for that we are very grateful.” Lead actor Jason Scott Lee put it in a very personal, one on one level when he said, “The people here are very warm, it’s like Hawaii and I feel very at home. Except I get to experience a myriad of different sights and sounds, sample the nightlife scene and meet new friends. The food is great and I enjoy the different flavours and choices available.”
Co-star Jang Hyuk when he was asked about our ever popular topic of Singaporean food and what he liked most, immediately responded “the delicious chilli crab and Tiger beer.” He went on to add that, “Singapore is very clean and beautiful”, and he makes no issue of walking the streets and shopping malls, and queuing at a stall in a local food court for the Singapore experience.
Dance Of The Dragon tells the story of three people whose lives are pulled into review and assessment when their paths cross. It started as a ‘Romeo and Juliet’ inspired love story set in Singapore, and evolved into the story of multi-dimensional relationships as portrayed in the film. A couple in - yet falling out - of love, student and teacher, fathers and sons, competitive suitors, commitment and sacrifice for the sake of one’s passion, be it for art or human relationship, all are explored with sensitivity, delicacy and refined artistry. John Radel, Co-Director and Director Of Photography of the film, shares “Without doubt Dance Of The Dragon is the most emotionally moving and visually stunning project I have been involved with to date. Singapore provided our film with the romantic backdrop of both a diverse cultural heritage and a landscape full of history and beauty. I was gifted with an amazing cast who opened their hearts to the audience, and a world cast crew who worked tirelessly to make sure every frame of the film looked amazing. I know Dance Of The Dragon is going to put Singapore on the international film industry stage, and I look forward to sharing it with the world.”
An opinion local A-list artiste Fann Wong was coincidentally referring to when, at the press conference to announce the film’s production kick-off, she said “At last, I get to shoot an international film right here at home.”
We’ve come full circle. The film shoot for Dance Of The Dragon has wrapped.
- The End -

Fann has been confirmed to be attending the 12th Pusan International Film Festival held in from 4 - 12 Oct. She will then be travelling to China again in the same month for some promotional events and to attend 金鸡奖and 同一首歌.
