Sifu kicks Fann down slope
By Sylvia Toh Paik Choo

FANN Wong (below, right) rolled down a slope over a rainbow.

If you think that reads like a Channel 8 English subtitle, well, you are close.

Martial arts sifu Rainbow Chen spoke of how, when he arrived in Singapore to work in local TV, he 'accidentally kicked Fann Wong and she went down a slope'.

The only thing going down last week was plenty of food and drink as the cast and crew of Dance Of The Dragon wrapped up filming with a barbecue at the Marina Mandarin hotel.

Shot entirely in Singapore, the story of love, passion, courage and hope whirled to 'the end' after a 47-day shoot.

We were a little surprised to find people sedately tucking into a buffet, hardly moving around to mingle.

No doubt this was the winding down after lights, camera and action seen islandwide. The locations sound like an STB brochure - Jubilee Hall, City Hall, Soup Restaurant, Tea Chapter, Telok Blangah Hill, Tuas.

For actors Fann, Jason Scott Lee and Korean hunk Jang Hyuk, and trainers Shawn and Gladys Tay (dance) and Rainbow, Wang Feng and Guo Zhifeng (action) it was time to let down their hair (well, maybe not the clean-shaven Rainbow and Wang and Guo).

It was hard to get a word in edgewise with leading lady Fann as her skiv was permanently attached to her elbow. Ever on the guard with the media, especially the non-Chinese-speaking, she even attempted to answer a question directed at Fann.

FYI, Fann, the princess of Caldecott, does speak fluent English.

She didn't think Zhang Ziyi would have anything to worry about (when Dance Of The Dragon screens), no she hasn't had any calls yet for a role with nudity, David Gan did not do her hair this time, but he did give her the strawberry dress she was wearing.

For Robin Leong of Easternlight Film Production, this was a happy time. 'Singapore is such an international place, I wish I had thought to make this film earlier!'

MAN OF YEAR

Meanwhile, at St James Power Station, the man whose family name is synonymous with the art of making and distributing films, MrHoward Shaw, was named Man of the Year by upmarket men's publication Menmode.

The 37-year-old Shaw Brothers' grandson has 'absolutely nothing to do with movies' but has devoted his time and money to environmental issues.

He became head of the Singapore Environment Council 11 years ago, long before green became a fashionable colour.

Film Shoot For Dance Of The Dragon Wraps

Easternlight Film Productions is pleased to report that the film shoot of our first movie Dance Of The Dragon - starring Jang Hyuk, Fann Wong and Jason Scott Lee – is completed. The camera started rolling on Monday 31st July and, after 47 exciting shoot days spanning over a period of eight weeks, will whirl down to a halt on Sunday 23rd September 2007. Visual and audio post production of the film commences immediately, and the film is scheduled for international release early 2008.

Filmed entirely in Singapore, Dance Of The Dragon is a tale of love, passion, courage and hope, with the demanding and visually stunning disciplines of ballroom dancing and martial arts woven into the plot. It is the latest film project supported by the Film in Singapore! Scheme – a Singapore Tourism Board (STB) initiative to encourage leading filmmakers and television producers worldwide to film and produce quality movies and television programmes locally, in order to increase top-of-mind recall of Singapore as a destination among the global audience.

Ms Winnie Pua, Director, Brand Management, at the Singapore Tourism Board, said, “We congratulate Easternlight on wrapping up their shoot in Singapore. We are delighted to support Dance of the Dragon which features an international cast and crew, and can’t wait to see it released next year. We hope that viewers around the world will enjoy the film and be inspired to visit and experience Uniquely Singapore for themselves. We welcome more filmmakers to consider filming in Singapore, where there is a unique blend of modernity, colourful cultures and rich traditions offering a varied backdrop as settings for their productions.”

Locations featured in the film include Raffles Jubilee Hall, City Hall at The Padang, Telok Blangah Hill, Soup Restaurant on Seah Street, Tea Chapter on Neil Road, the Goodwood Park Hotel, the Intercontinental Hotel at Bugis, Robinson Road, and the police training village at Tuas. In addition, ambient shots in the film feature streets around the Marina Bay area and the iconic Singapore skyline.

Executive Producer Robin Leong said, “ We hope that audiences around the world will get to experience the beautiful, culture rich, cosmopolitan city that is Singapore through the international release of Dance Of The Dragon. The production was blessed with a brilliant production team and world class performances from the cast, and we are excited to share our vision of making international quality movies with fellow Singaporeans.

Calvin Tan, Marketing Director for Easternlight Films added “We’ve received so much support from the STB, media, partnering companies and sponsors, all of whom pulled out the stops to help us achieve our vision for the film. People rallied around us, wishing for us to succeed, and for that we are very grateful.” Lead actor Jason Scott Lee put it in a very personal, one on one level when he said, “The people here are very warm, it’s like Hawaii and I feel very at home. Except I get to experience a myriad of different sights and sounds, sample the nightlife scene and meet new friends. The food is great and I enjoy the different flavours and choices available.”

Co-star Jang Hyuk when he was asked about our ever popular topic of Singaporean food and what he liked most, immediately responded “the delicious chilli crab and Tiger beer.” He went on to add that, “Singapore is very clean and beautiful”, and he makes no issue of walking the streets and shopping malls, and queuing at a stall in a local food court for the Singapore experience.

Dance Of The Dragon tells the story of three people whose lives are pulled into review and assessment when their paths cross. It started as a ‘Romeo and Juliet’ inspired love story set in Singapore, and evolved into the story of multi-dimensional relationships as portrayed in the film. A couple in - yet falling out - of love, student and teacher, fathers and sons, competitive suitors, commitment and sacrifice for the sake of one’s passion, be it for art or human relationship, all are explored with sensitivity, delicacy and refined artistry. John Radel, Co-Director and Director Of Photography of the film, shares “Without doubt Dance Of The Dragon is the most emotionally moving and visually stunning project I have been involved with to date. Singapore provided our film with the romantic backdrop of both a diverse cultural heritage and a landscape full of history and beauty. I was gifted with an amazing cast who opened their hearts to the audience, and a world cast crew who worked tirelessly to make sure every frame of the film looked amazing. I know Dance Of The Dragon is going to put Singapore on the international film industry stage, and I look forward to sharing it with the world.”

An opinion local A-list artiste Fann Wong was coincidentally referring to when, at the press conference to announce the film’s production kick-off, she said “At last, I get to shoot an international film right here at home.”

We’ve come full circle. The film shoot for Dance Of The Dragon has wrapped.

- The End -

Fann has been confirmed to be attending the 12th Pusan International Film Festival held in from 4 - 12 Oct. She will then be travelling to China again in the same month for some promotional events and to attend 金鸡奖and 同一首歌.

Get set to wait and wait
By Sylvia Toh Paik Choo

FANN Wong is like the proverbial bus. You wait and wait and wait, and never come.

Get set to wait and wait
Clad in a bathrobe, Fann Wong met fans and the media during the shoot of Dance Of The Dragon at a local hotel.

And then again, you know you've arrived when you don't have to appear.

If this is all slightly merry-go-round, imagine how we felt. 'After this scene', 'Twenty minutes', 'About 20 minutes', 'After this last scene'.

INTERNATIONAL

It was the weekend shoot of the grand finale scene for Dance Of The Dragon, a local film with international actors shot entirely in Singapore.

The movie is produced by Robin Leong of Easternlight Films, the Asian production arm of Los Angeles-based Arclight Films, and stars America's Jason Scott Lee, Korea's Jang Hyuk and Singapore's Fann Wong.

They are directed by Australia's Max Mannix.

We were waiting for Miss Wong.

Because she is the lead female character, there was no call for her to show up on the set until camera and lights were ready for her.

Leads have stand-ins during rehearsals, remember this, stage mum, as they are paid by the hour.

All about the ballroom in the InterContinental Hotel, uncles and aunties and young people who were old enough to be their children, were marshalled to their places.

Daily rates for extras vary from $80 to $200, costumes and makan provided, but it could be a long haul, from 7am to 7pm.

A lady and gentleman said it was a part-time thing as they couldn't possibly do it full-time, the sitting around and waiting.

Some 1,500 extras are involved, and twice as many chicken wings, soya bean milk, apples, oranges, buns, cakes, bottled water.

If you'd woken up in the ballroom last weekend, you'd have thought you were caught between the taping of two local TV shows - the Inter-schools Debate and The Dance Floor.

The 'audience' looked like they were there to support a team, the 'dancers' (actually from Shawn and Gladys Tay's dance studio) like they were in it for a trophy.

It was the setting for Fann's climactic scene and yes, she can dance!

We have it on good word from all who've worked with her on this picture.

Gladys said: 'It's her attitude, she wanted to learn and was not afraid, and she gave three months' intensive training to it.'

A sneak of the rushes proved the gushing to be true. The cinematography is comparable to any international film, as is the acting.

A spokesman said: 'Fann has more than risen to the job.'

At which point, Fann herself suddenly materialised at 5pm, in white bathrobe and flip-flops and was quickly bundled away.

$80,000 gown up for sale

The diamond-studded dress worn by Fann Wong in her latest film will be auctioned on eBay for charity

PHOTO: EASTERNLIGHT FILM PRODUCTIONS
'Absolutely not. Actually I was hoping they would - the dance floor would be sparkling with diamonds and that would be so romantic' - Fann Wong, when asked if she was worried that the 97 diamonds and 8,000 crystals on the silk dress she wore in the movie Dance Of The Dragon would fall off

MOST women would feel nervous wearing an $80,000 diamond and crystal-studded gown, but not Fann Wong.
The MediaCorp actress dons the Francis Cheong-designed outfit while performing a dance with Korean actor Jyang Hyuk in the movie Dance Of The Dragon, a production by Easternlight Films.

The movie is being shot and produced here.

The silk dress is encrusted with 97 diamonds totalling 12.8 carats sponsored by Soo Kee Jewellery, and 8,000 crystals in different shades of red.

Each jewel was glued on by hand, and it took nearly 400 hours to complete the job.

Fann, 36, said she felt 'glamorous' wearing it.

Asked if she was afraid that the gems would fall off while she was dancing, she said: 'Absolutely not. Actually I was hoping they would - the dance floor would be sparkling with diamonds and that would be so romantic.'

Those who fancy wearing the dress can buy it as it will be auctioned on eBay on Nov 1.

Easternlight Films, Soo Kee Jewellery and Francis Cheong have decided to donate the proceeds - excluding the labour cost of the dress which is estimated at $15,000 - to The Straits Times School Pocket Money Fund, which helps needy students.

Of the inspiration for his gown, Cheong said: 'Being an old friend of Fann's and having designed several outfits for her before, I know what she is and isn't comfortable with.'

The dress will be on display at Francis Cheong - The Atelier at 01-09 Orchard Hotel Shopping Arcade and selected Soo Kee Jewellery stores before the auction begins on Nov 1.

Dance Of The Dragon, which also stars Hollywood actor Jason Scott Lee, is about a love triangle which starts when aspiring ballroom dancer Kwan (Jyang Hyuk) comes between couple Emi (Fann) and Cheng (Lee). It is slated for release early next year.

She'll STRIP for the right SCRIPT

Fann Wong says she is ready to go to bare-all extremes, especially if noted Taiwanese director Lee Ang wants it
By Wendy Teo

September 10, 2007

LOCAL actress Fann Wong said she has no problems taking her clothes off in front of camera.

Fann Wong turns up the glam factor at a recent charity event. --Picture: KENNETH KOH
The 36-year-old told Shin Min Daily News in an interview on Saturday: 'What's the big deal about being naked? The human body was nude to begin with.'

She had been chatting about acclaimed Taiwanese director Lee Ang's movie Lust, Caution, which won Best Picture at last week's Venice Film festival.

The movie has been making headlines even before its release, for its steamy love scenes with full nudity by stars Tony Leung, 45, and Tang Wei, 28.

When asked if she was willing to do something similar, Fann said: 'Reveal all? If it's Lee Ang, and the script is challenging, I would consider.'

She won't be the first S'porean actress to reveal all for the camera.

In 2001, former Miss Singapore Paulyn Sun bared all for the film Ichi the Killer.

But Fann has received script offers which require nudity.

INTERNATIONAL OFFERS

Her manager told The New Paper yesterday that the offers were both 'local and international', even though they are 'quite rare'.

She added that both MediaCorp and Fann came quite close to accepting such a role in an international film, but had to reject it due to a conflict in schedules.

So, will Fann ask boyfriend Christopher Lee for his permission before going nude?

'No need to ask him,' said Fann with a laugh.

She added that she's more worried about her management's reaction.

She said: 'The first person to ask would be my manager. Because if I did something like that, my manager would be the first person to jump.'

But Fann's manager told The New Paper that it 'really depends on the movie, the script, and the level of comfort for the artiste'.

She added that if Fann is willing, then 'we will talk and discuss further', adding that it won't be a one-sided decision.

Referring to Jack Neo's movie Just Follow Law - in which Fann got rave reviews for her portrayal of an uptight yuppie who switched bodies with an uncouth blue-collar worker - the manager said that they had allowed the bathroom scene where Fann's co-star Gurmit Singh is seen helping her to shower, because they 'had trust in the director'.

The manager said: 'There must be understanding of what the director is going to do, and how he is going to do it.

'With Jack, he was very understanding, and worked within what was comfortable with us.'

And that is probably why Jack received the go-ahead too, for casting Fann as a tattooed gangster in his yet-to-be-released movie tentatively titled Long De Chuan Ren (loosely translated as Heir To Loanshark).

Fann will reportedly show off her bare back in it. But going nude is, of course, taking things to a totally different level.

Fann admitted that she will also be worried about how local viewers would react if she does decide to take it all off.

After all, it is only this year that Fann began to shed her clean-scrubbed virginal image she developed in her 13-year acting career.

In a previous interview, she insisted to The New Paper that she does have a daring side to her.

She said then: 'I may look dainty on the outside, but actually on the inside, I have strange blood coursing through my veins.

'I can go to extremes when it comes to acting and I want to see myself go to that kind of extremes.'

Fann was not available for further comment as she was busy filming Dance Of The Dragon. In this movie, which co-stars Korean actor Jang Hyuk and Jason Scott Lee, she plays a former ballroom dancing champion who gets caught between the two leading men.

Do these stars make the grade?

FANN WONG, 36

Most visible role: The butt-kicking Chon Lin in Shanghai Knights (2003) alongside Hong Kong action star Jackie Chan and comedian Owen Wilson.

The purported sequel Shanghai Dawn, which would have reunited the above cast, has yet to see the light of day.

Meanwhile, the MediaCorp actress is putting on her dancing shoes for a lead role in Dance Of The Dragon. She plays a ballroom dancing teacher whom Korean heart-throb Jang Hyuk and American actor Jason Scott Lee tussle over.

Dragon will be shot and produced in Singapore by Easternlight Film Productions, the Asian production arm of Los Angeles-based Arclight Films. The $4-million film is due out next year.

Reception: Stephen Hunter of the Washington Post called her 'an enchanting new film presence' in Shanghai Knights and said she 'combines a dancer's grace with a fighter's speed, and looks great standing still or whirling'.

Joe Leydon, the reviewer for Tinseltown trade publication Variety, allowed that in the same film, 'Fann is easy on the eyes and quick in her moves, which is all her character requires'.

From MTVAsia.com

Another Singapore production effort by homegrown director Jack Neo, this time it's about the Singapore government's culture and how the business organization chart works, which are hilariously and sometimes realistically portrayed by a strong cast of Singaporean talents. Fann Wong is engaging in her character, a deviation from her usual roles of waif-like characters to a foul-mouthed gangster-like employee. It's definitely an eye-opener for fans of hers to watch her shed her usual prim-and-proper appearance.
